The Rebellion Way

Norfolk, loop from Norwich

Back to home
Distance
About 230 miles as a loop
Difficulty
Moderate. Mostly gentle, with off-road sections

The Rebellion Way is a long-distance loop around Norfolk put together by Cycling UK, taking its name from the county's history of rebellion, from Boudica to Robert Kett. It mixes quiet country lanes, forest tracks and coastal paths, and its gentle terrain makes it one of the most accessible multi-day routes in the country.

The ride

Norfolk's reputation for flatness is only partly deserved: the route is never mountainous, but there's enough gentle up and down to keep the legs honest, and the off-road sections add variety. A gravel bike or a sturdy tourer is ideal, though much of it is rideable on most bikes with sensible tyres.

The character is big skies, flint villages, quiet lanes and the North Norfolk coast. It's riding that lets you switch off and look around, with the terrain rarely demanding more than steady pedalling.

Know before you go

  • Most riders take several days over the loop, so plan your overnight stops. Book ahead in summer, as the coast is popular.
  • Some off-road sections can be muddy or soft after rain, especially through the forest and along field edges, so allow extra time in wet spells.
  • The coast is exposed to the wind, and an easterly can make the flat miles feel long. Check the forecast and pack accordingly.

Make a day of it

The loop passes through or near Norwich, the Norfolk Broads, the royal estate at Sandringham and the North Norfolk coast, so there's no shortage of places to stop, explore and eat along the way.

Because it's a loop, you can start anywhere that suits, and the gentle terrain makes it easy to shorten or extend days as you go.

Riding it responsibly

Much of the route is on quiet public lanes and shared paths. Ride courteously past walkers, horse riders and farm traffic, and close gates behind you.

Norfolk's coast and heaths are sensitive landscapes. Stick to the route, leave no trace, and give ground-nesting birds a wide berth in season.

Ride within your limits and the law. Roads and trails change; check conditions before you travel.
